Artist Statement
It's The Puerto Rican parade in Chicago and the neighborhood chants "¡Yo soy Boricua, pa'que tu lo sepas!". I scream it every chance I get, twisting an English tongue to the rhythm of my ancestors. De bandera a bandera, Division St. in Chicago is a piece of Puerto Rico blown westward, and I a leaf in the wind. This mixed media collection explores the experiences of the Puerto Rican Diaspora as it relates to serial displacement, colonialism, identity, and resistance. The pieces featured in this project are under continuous construction as I continue to to unpack more of my lineage, identity, and experiences as a Chicago born Puerto Rican. Through storytelling in the arts, I aim to empower others to explore their roots, deconstructing and reconstructing identity and belonging as we know it.
Bio
Linda Sol ’21 is a rapper and poet with an already impressive list of music tracks under her belt. An Urban Studies major, Linda’s music aims to find balance between art that pushes the boundaries of social justice and art for its own inherent beauty and the joy it brings. For her project, Linda will be creating an EP centered around Puerto Rican migration, serial displacement, cultural preservation, Chicago, and identity. Her EP project is continuously inspired by her own journey with identity and her senior research.
