Healing Hearts Circle Series with Walter Thompson-Hernandez

May 27 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm

As part of our Healing Hearts Circle Series, we are truly excited to introduce the amazing Walter Thompson-Hernandez. As a writer for The New York Times, Walter’s stories come from the people he meets and gets to know, giving voice to the humanity and struggles of those most alienated, oppressed and marginalized. A multi-media artist, his work honors the triumph and tragedy of the lives of diverse people and communities. He is the 2019 recipient of the Whiting Creative Non-Fiction Award for his critically acclaimed book, The Compton Cowboys: The New Generation of Cowboys in America’s Urban Heartland, just published this past April.

Walter will talk about a career that includes “The Blaxicans of Los Angeles” project on understanding the limitations and prospects of multiracial identity through the lens of Black-Mexican Americans. Walter explores the impacts of Black Mexicans on black and brown race relations and the prospects for solidarity and racial and political coalitions. A Q&A will follow.
